yo yo yo, movie review time (yeah yeah...i know, i'm essentially still on vacation as i'm still unemployed - free housing = mateo stretching out his good times)

i watched battle royal yesterday afternoon (part of mateo's lazy sunday afternoon spent with cousin antony). i've been trying to catch this flick for the past year or two and i haven't been able to find it ANYWHERE state-side (mind you i didn't look THAT hard, but it definately isn't the type of flick you'd find at blockbuster or hollywood video). it is an interesting japanese film about this class of seventh graders who (okay, stay with me here, this is a bit of a leap of faith...) are forced onto an abandoned island and have to fight each other to the death. now if you can accept this bizarre setup (which personally i think could have been done MUCH MUCH better), but again, if you can accept the flimsy setup and reasoning behind everything, i find the film very interesting and fascinating. it brings up an interesting question. what would you do in this situation? each of the 42 different kids deal with their fate in a different way and it is interesting to see how everything plays itself out. i recommend it whole-heartedly, if you can get through some excessive violence and can look past the weak setup.

3 to 3.5 of 4 stars (depending on your taste in violence and ability to deal with subtitles)

oh yeah, apparently this was based on a book...gotta keep my eyes out for that ish...
